Jack Black Sephora Birthday Gift
This year the Sephora Gods smiled down on me and granted me not one but two birthday gifts! By some random fluke I was able to order first the Tarte Birthday gift set and secondly the Jack Black skin care gift set. Today's post is all about the Sephora Jack Black Beauty Insider Birthday gift set which really surprised me. The set includes a 1 oz. tube of Deep Dive™ Glycolic Facial Cleanser & a 1 oz. tube of Clean Break™ Oil-Free Moisturizer as pictured below.
When I selected the Jack Black skin care birthday set I didn't put a ton of thought into it. There were only 3 options available: a Tarte set, a Caudalie set, and the Jack Black set. I had already ordered and received the Tarte set and I knew that Caudalie tested on animals. A quick search of PETA's Beauty without Bunnies database informed me that Jack Black was a cruelty-free company and I promptly added the set to my cart.
My skin is extremely picky, quite oily in my problem zones, and very prone to breakouts. So before I try out any skin care product on my temperamental face I like to do a bit of research. It was then that I discovered that Jack Black is in fact a men's skin care line. My first thought was there's no way I can use this product on MY skin! After reading some reviews of fellow Beauty Insiders who didn't initially realize that the set was from a men's skin care line & reading some of the wonderful things they had to say, specifically about the Deep Dive™ Glycolic Facial Cleanser, I thought why not!
When I decided to start using the cleanser my skin texture was quite uneven & rough, the pores in my problem areas such as around my nose, chin, and t-zone were often clogged noticeably enhancing their visibility, and I was experiencing quite regular breakouts.
One of the very first things I loved about this cleanser was the fact that it is a dual-purpose cleanser. Translation = one less skin care product you need to purchase! It is both a cleanser and facial mask that minimizes the appearance of pores, reduces imperfections, and helps control oil. All of my initial hesitations went flying out the window at this point.
I decided to first try it out as a cleanser to see if the reviews I had read about its amazing pore cleansing abilities would apply to my skin. I removed my make-up, rinsed my face, and squeezed a moderate amount out of the tube. I then proceeded to lather the cleanser on my face as instructed and quickly realized I would require more cleanser than I had original dispensed. An extra squeeze of cleanser proved to be most effective and after rinsing the cleanser off my face I immediately felt a difference in the texture of my skin and my pores. Everything felt smoother than it had before!
At this stage my skin was definitely looking for moisture and I figured it was a great opportunity to try out the Clean Break™ Oil-Free Moisturizer. My skin is the most picky where moisturizers are concerned. More often than not they tend to irritate my face and/or cause breakouts. I was pleasantly surprised with this moisturizer as it didn't cause either of these. It's not my favourite moisturizer (I prefer one with SPF protection built-in) but I do enjoy it as a night time moisturizer or for days when I don't plan to venture outdoors.
Now it was time to try out this dual-cleanser as a Glycolic facial mask. I applied a generously thin coat and let it sit for the requisite five minutes. I wasn't really sure what to expect considering I had never used a dual-cleanser before but TBH my expectations were low. After about a minute or two I could feel the mask drying and tightening on my face. I was indeed pretty surprised considering my initially low expectations. I waited the final three minutes and rinsed my face with warm water. My face felt squeaky clean but also quite parched so I grabbed the moisturizer and applied a liberal amount; a second coat was required to really re-hydrate my skin. That second coat left my skin feeling like a newborns bottom!

Will purchase again.
Will purchase again to use primarily as a cleanser mainly with the occasional mask treatment thrown in.
On the fence. Would purchase again as a night time moisturizer.
